Orange Outage Compensation: What Small Businesses Actually Get for 10 Hours Without a Network, and How to Claim a Real Loss

Orange outage compensation: what small businesses get after 21 October 2026
TL;DR: What compensation do you get for the Orange outage?

Orange outage compensation after the network failure of 21 October 2026 is a month of double mobile data for affected Orange, Sosh and Pro customers, starting at their next renewal, with no discount on the bill. Orange's contract only promises a pro-rata refund when service isn't restored within two days of your report, so a ten-hour outage doesn't qualify. If the outage cost your business real money, you can still claim that specific loss, as long as you can prove it. Start collecting the evidence today.
Developing story. Last updated 22 Oct 2026, 14:33 CEST. We'll update this article when Orange explains how it identifies affected lines and applies the extra data.
Here is what happened in the Orange outage and what caused it, with the full timeline, on our sister site MeanCEO. This article is for the hairdresser, the shop owner, the consultant and the solo founder in France whose phone went silent for most of a working day, and who now wants to know what they're owed.
I run small companies on tight budgets, so I read the goodwill gesture, the contract terms and the claim steps with one question in mind: is this worth an hour of your time? For most people the answer is no. For a business that lost a real sale, it can be yes.

What compensation does Orange give after the 21 October outage?

On 22 October Orange told the tech sites Clubic and Numerama and the magazine Tom's Guide that customers hit by the outage get a geste commercial, a goodwill gesture:
  • double the mobile data in their plan, for one month;
  • starting at their next renewal date, so it shows up on a later bill cycle;
  • for Orange, Sosh and Pro customers who were affected, according to Clubic;
  • with no discount on the bill: Orange doesn't plan to cut invoices, according to Presse-citron.
Plan (examples from Clubic)Normal dataDuring the gesture month
Sosh 20 GB20 GB40 GB
Orange 300 GB 5G+300 GB600 GB
Two things are still open. Orange hasn't said how it will decide which lines were affected, since not every line went down, and it hasn't announced any claim form. Nobody needs to apply for the gesture so far. If you run your company on an Orange Business contract, we couldn't find public details on how the gesture or your contract's service commitments apply, so ask your account manager in writing.

Why doesn't a 10-hour outage give you a refund?

Because the clock in the contract starts later. According to Tom's Guide and the consumer site Mobidocs, which read Orange's general terms (article 11.2, version of 8 October 2026) and Sosh's terms (article 11.2):
  1. Orange commits to restore mobile service within two days of the customer's report; Sosh says two business days.
  2. Only after that delay can you ask for a pro-rata refund, paid as a credit on a later invoice.
  3. You have to show you were in the affected area, and reporting the problem within 24 hours helps.
  4. Separately, you can still claim a specific loss you can prove.
The outage started around 11:20 and Orange announced the fix shortly after 21:00, so it ended long before any two-day clock ran out. Some websites quote a rule of "48 hours or 10% of the month". Mobidocs found no such threshold in the current terms, so don't build a claim on it.
There is one precedent that people keep mentioning. After the 12-hour outage of 6 July 2012, which hit about 30 million customers, Orange gave free call and SMS days plus extra data, at an estimated cost of 30 to 40 million euros, according to AFP. That was also a voluntary gesture, decided by Orange.

Can a small business claim for lost sales after the Orange outage?

Yes, if the loss is real, specific and provable. A vague "I probably lost clients" won't work. A booking platform that shows three cancelled appointments because clients couldn't reach you, a delivery you had to send by courier, or a second SIM you bought that afternoon are the kind of costs you can document.
Orange outage evidence to keep: your line number and plan name, where you were hour by hour, screenshots of no service or failed calls, missed calls and late texts, orders, bookings or sales lost that day, card payments that failed, extra costs such as another SIM, taxis or couriers, your report date to Orange, names and times of every Orange contact, and copies of every letter and reply
Ten pieces of evidence to collect for an Orange outage claim.
Then follow the claim steps Tom's Guide lists for Orange customers:
How to claim a real loss after the Orange outage: report it on 3900 and note the date, add up the loss on one page, write a complaint with your evidence to Orange's consumer appeals service, keep every reply and reference number, and as a consumer go to the Médiateur des communications électroniques
Five steps to claim a proven loss after the Orange outage.
  1. Report it. Call customer service on 3900, and write down the date and the reference you get.
  2. Add up the loss. One page with what you lost, how you know, and the amount. Attach the evidence above.
  3. Write a complaint. Send it to the Service Recours Consommateurs Orange, 33732 Bordeaux Cedex 9, by registered letter if the amount matters to you.
  4. Keep every reply. Letters, emails, chat transcripts and reference numbers.
  5. Ask the ombudsman. If Orange refuses or doesn't answer, consumers can go to the Médiateur des communications électroniques. Tom's Guide notes this option is for consumers only, so a business line has to rely on its contract and, as a last step, the courts.
Here is a short letter you can adapt. Write it in French for Orange France:
Objet : Panne du réseau mobile Orange du 21 octobre 2026, ligne [numéro]

Madame, Monsieur,
Be realistic about the effort. For a missed coffee meeting, the double data is all you'll get. For a lost contract or a day of failed card payments, an hour of paperwork is worth it. How do you keep a small business running the next time the network fails?

This was Orange's third national mobile outage of 2026, after 30 January and 29 June, according to Selectra and Clubic. So plan for a fourth. MeanCEO has the full one-carrier audit for founders; for a small business, these four steps cover most of it:
  • Turn on Wi-Fi calling on your phone. Orange itself told customers to use secure Wi-Fi during the outage, and fibre largely kept working, according to the French press.
  • Keep a second SIM or eSIM on another network, such as Bouygues Telecom, SFR or Free. A cheap plan costs less than one lost booking, and Fe/male Switch compares the cheapest second lines in its guide to Orange outage SMS codes, along with how to move bank and payment logins off text messages.
  • Ask your card-terminal provider whether your terminal can switch to Wi-Fi or Ethernet when its SIM loses signal, and keep a payment link ready as a backup.
  • Prepare a status message for your website, Google Business Profile and email list, so customers know how to reach you. Our guide to customer service excellence has more on keeping customers on side when something breaks.
