Claude Duet in Europe: It's US-Only for Now. What EU Founders Can Do Meanwhile, and the GDPR Questions to Ask Before an AI Agent Reads Your Customer Email

TL;DR: Can I use Claude Duet in Europe?

Claude Duet in Europe isn't available yet: Anthropic launched its proactive agent app on 21 October 2026 as a US-only research preview for Pro and Max subscribers, with no EU date announced. Access needs a US Claude account and a waitlist invite, so skip the workarounds. Use the wait to clean your inbox, write approval rules and get your GDPR paperwork ready, because an agent that reads customer email processes personal data.
Developing story. Last updated 22 Oct 2026, 07:25 CEST. We'll update this article as Anthropic publishes more on availability outside the US and on data handling.
Here is what Claude Duet is and how it works, with the full launch story, on our sister site MeanCEO. This article covers one question European founders keep asking: when does Duet come here, and what should we do before it does?
I run a bootstrapped company from Europe, and my inbox is where customer data piles up first. An agent reading it every few hours sounds great, and I still answer for that data under the GDPR, so I want the paperwork sorted before I press connect.

What do we know so far about Claude Duet EU availability?

Anthropic describes Duet as "a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent", built for professionals and small business owners. These are the confirmed facts, with dates:
  • 21 October 2026: Anthropic announced Claude Duet as a research preview, with a waitlist "starting with US Pro and Max subscribers".
  • US only for now: the Claude help center lists three requirements: a Pro or Max plan, a Claude account in the US, and an invitation from the waitlist. Invites go out in waves, with no guaranteed date.
  • Plans: Team and Enterprise plans aren't included yet. Anthropic says they come later.
  • Price: no extra cost on Pro and Max during the preview, though it uses your plan's usage limits.
  • Limit reset: admitted users get one full reset of the five-hour and weekly limits, available until 30 November 2026.
Our MeanCEO explainer covers the morning brief, check-ins and pricing in full. For Europe, one detail stands out: the help center names Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign and Calendly as connections. Microsoft 365 isn't available yet, which matters for every European founder who runs on Outlook.

What don't we know yet about Claude Duet in Europe?

Anthropic hasn't answered these open questions yet:
  • An EU launch date. The preview is US-only, and Anthropic has named no date for Europe or any other region.
  • Team and Enterprise timing. Anthropic says "later" and gives no month.
  • Data retention. I found no published period for how long Duet keeps what it reads.
  • Training use. I found no statement on whether Duet data is used to train models.
  • Microsoft 365 support. The help center says it "isn't available yet", with no date.
  • The extra safety details. Anthropic promised more on safety "in the coming days".

Can I get Claude Duet in Europe through a workaround?

According to the Claude help center, access is tied to a Claude account in the US. The invite is linked to your waitlist email, which should match your Claude account and the Apple or Google account on your phone.
My advice: don't try to get around it. A borrowed US account or a fake location goes against the setup Anthropic describes. You'd also be pointing an agent at customer email with no clear terms for your region, and that's a weak answer when a customer asks where their data went.

Which GDPR questions should I ask before an AI agent reads customer email?

An agent in your inbox handles names, addresses and orders. For that data you're the controller: the business that decides why and how it's used. The provider running the agent acts as your processor. Our guide to GDPR compliance for European startups explains both roles. Ask these questions of Duet, or of any AI agent, before you connect it:
Question to askWhy it matters under GDPR
Is there a data processing agreement (DPA) for this product?Article 28 requires a written contract with any processor handling personal data for you
Which subprocessors touch my data, and where?Article 28 sets rules for processors hiring other companies, and you need to know who they are
Does my data leave the EU, and on what legal basis?Transfers outside the EEA need a mechanism under Chapter V, such as an adequacy decision or standard contractual clauses
How long is data kept, and can I delete it?Storage limitation in Article 5: keep personal data no longer than you need it
Is my data used to train models?Your privacy notice lists the purposes you use data for, and you can't list one you don't know about
What is my lawful basis for letting an agent read customer email?Article 6: every processing needs one, such as contract or legitimate interests
What does my privacy notice say about AI tools?Articles 13 and 14 require you to tell people who receives their data
For Duet, the retention and training rows stay open until Anthropic publishes them. The rules are moving too: our news piece on the Digital Omnibus and GDPR changes covers what EU governments backed for simpler GDPR rules and fewer cookie banners.

What do Claude Duet's guardrails cover today?

The safety setup limits what the agent does without you, according to Anthropic's announcement and help center:
  • Approval first. Before Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows exactly what it will do and waits for your yes.
  • Hard limits. It never trades securities, moves money between accounts or accesses someone else's account, even with approval.
  • No passwords in view. You type passwords into a separate form on your device, and Duet never sees passwords or sign-in tokens directly.
Two details matter for data protection. Disconnecting an app stops future access, and the help center says Duet keeps its memory of what it learned in earlier conversations. Duet has defences against prompt injection, where hidden instructions in an email try to steer the agent, and the help center admits "no defense is perfect". Our cybersecurity guide for non-technical entrepreneurs covers phishing basics that apply here too.

What this means for you: what can EU founders prepare now?

Here is the prep I'm doing while Duet stays US-only. Every step pays off with any AI agent you pick later:
  1. Clean the inbox. Archive old threads and customer data you no longer need. Less data means less for an agent to read (data minimisation, Article 5).
  2. Decide which apps to connect. List each app with one reason. Duet carries over your Claude memory, skills and connected apps, according to Anthropic, so the choices you make in Claude now come with you. Our sister guide on setting up Claude Duet as a small business owner covers which apps to connect first.
  3. Write your approval rules. Duet asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes. Add your own: no refunds over a set amount, nothing sent to your lawyer or accountant unchecked.
  4. Name the off-limits data. Health details from clients, ID scans, payroll. Keep them in folders you never connect.
  5. Check the DPA and subprocessor list. When a US provider's agent processes your customers' personal data, Article 28 asks for a processor contract. Find and file the provider's DPA and subprocessor list first.
  6. Tell your customers. Add a line to your privacy notice naming the AI tools that process their messages, as Articles 13 and 14 require.
  7. Set a review date. Every quarter, check which apps are connected and disconnect what you no longer use.

What can EU founders use while they wait?

Duet's selling point is an agent that checks in on its own. Until it reaches Europe, simple automations cover part of that, such as a filter that labels invoices or new leads posted to Slack. Our guides on automating your business without developers and tools that connect your apps show where to start.
OpenAI's rival, Dots, launched on 29 September 2026. For ChatGPT Pro it skips the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, while Business Premium workspaces get it in Europe, as our MeanCEO piece on OpenAI's always-on agents and Europe explains. Run the same GDPR questions on it.
