Europe's Best VC Quarter in 4 Years: $25B Raised, 75% to AI, and Seed Founders Left Flat

Europe's $25B VC quarter: Q3 2026 venture funding
TL;DR: what happened to European venture funding in Q3 2026?

European startups raised $25 billion in July–September 2026, up 77% on a year earlier and the best quarter in four years, according to Crunchbase. But 75% of it went to AI, about 40% went to just four rounds of $1 billion or more, and seed funding stayed flat at about $2 billion. All-female founding teams received about 1% of deal value in 2026 so far, according to PitchBook. For bootstrapped and early-stage founders, the boom is mostly somebody else's.
If you read only the headlines this week, you'd think it was raining money in Europe. It is, just not on most founders. The money is pouring into a small number of AI and deep-tech companies, while the seed rounds that most first-time founders need are no bigger than a year ago.

The numbers: Europe's best quarter since 2022

European startups raised $25 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to Crunchbase News, up from $14 billion a year earlier and $24 billion in the second quarter. It was the strongest quarter in four years, and Europe took 16% of global venture funding.
  • AI dominated: $18.8 billion, or 75% of the total, the highest share on record. PitchBook's Q3 2026 European Venture Report, which counts differently, puts AI at two-thirds of the capital invested.
  • "Physical tech", meaning defence, data centres, energy, aerospace and robotics, took about half of all funding.
  • Mega-rounds carried the quarter. Four rounds of $1 billion or more made up close to 40% of the money.
  • Exits cooled. PitchBook reports that exits moderated from 2025's highs, with acquisitions as the main route to cash.

Seed founders didn't feel the boom

Look at the money by stage and the picture changes. Late-stage rounds took $17.3 billion across just 83 companies. Early-stage (Series A and B) took $5.7 billion across about 200 companies. Seed, which Crunchbase counts together with pre-seed and angel rounds, took about $2 billion across more than 750 companies, down on the previous quarter and flat on a year earlier.

In other words, 83 companies got about seven times as much as 750 seed-stage startups combined. And the number of deals is shrinking: PitchBook expects 2026's European deal count to fall short of 2025's, even as the totals rise. Fewer founders are getting bigger cheques.

Where the money went in Europe

Venture funding by country in Q3 2026: United Kingdom $7.5B, Germany $5.0B, France $4.8B, Sweden $1.5B, Netherlands $1.4B, Spain $1.2B

The UK led with $7.5 billion, followed by Germany ($5 billion) and France ($4.8 billion). Germany and France had their best quarters since 2021–early 2022, and the Netherlands and Spain had their best since the COVID-era boom, according to Crunchbase. Counts differ by source: Dealroom, for example, measured UK startups at $6.1 billion in the same quarter.

And women founders?

Neither Q3 report gives a gender split, but PitchBook tracks it through the year. By early September, female-founded startups had raised €9.7 billion in 2026, almost as much as in all of 2025, according to PitchBook. That sounds like progress, until you look at who is on the team.
Share of European VC deal value going to women: any female founder 20.4% in 2024 and 16.5% in 2025; mixed teams 16.3% in 2026 to date; all-female teams 1.3% in 2025 and 1.0% in 2026 to date
Share of European venture funding going to female founders.
  • All-female teams received just 1% of deal value in 2026 so far, down from 1.3% in 2025.
  • Mixed-gender teams received 16.3%, up from 15%.
  • 2025 was a fourth year of decline for female founders' share of European VC, which fell to 16.5% from 20.4% in 2024, according to PitchBook's March analysis. In AI, women-founded startups got €3 billion of the €23.5 billion invested.
With AI taking three-quarters of the money and very few women among the founders of the companies raising mega-rounds, the AI boom is widening the gap rather than closing it. This week's GEM Women's Entrepreneurship Report found the same pattern in informal investment: about 70% goes to men. For the longer story, see venture capital and female founders: the numbers.

What this means for you

  1. Don't read the headline as "it's a good time to raise". It's a good time to raise if you're building AI infrastructure or defence tech at scale. For most early-stage founders, conditions are the same as a year ago.
  2. Make revenue your first investor. With seed flat, the founders in the strongest position are the ones who don't need a round. See how to build a startup without funding and our comparison of revenue-based financing versus equity.
  3. Use non-dilutive money. Grants and public loans don't care about the VC cycle. Start with grants for female entrepreneurs in Europe and which EU grants are worth it on grant-grants.com.
  4. If you do use AI, say how. Investors are paying for AI, but they can tell a real AI product from a chatbot bolted onto a website. Show the data, the workflow and the margin AI gives you.
  5. Look at women-focused investors. PitchBook reports a new wave of VC funds dedicated to female founders. Combine them with alternative funding sources.
